Rattling

If you’re hearing rattling throughout your house, you can relax knowing it’s not a group of skeletons hobbling around. However, rattling is often indicative of a complicated problem all the same. Your water pipes are fastened within the framework of your house to hold the pipes steady when water rushes through them, and rattling noises can be a sign that one of those fasteners has come loose or fallen away altogether. Unfortunately, depending on the location of the loosened fastener, you will likely need to have a professional expose the water pipes from inside the wall before the issue can be fixed.

Banging and Drumming Beats

Water pressure and water flow are usually the culprits of any banging noises you might be hearing in your house. When water faucets or valves are shut off suddenly, all that water can slam into the closed valve and create a banging sound which can sometimes even echo through your other pipes. This is called a water hammer, but it can also be an effect of overly high water pressure as well. Low water pressure can create air bubbles that can also produce banging noises when the air bursts around a pipe’s corner or when a faucet is opened.

Screeching

Loud screeches coming from your walls can be some of the most startling noises your plumbing system can make. Luckily, it tends to be the symptom of a pretty easily fixed problem. Screeching and squealing noises can happen when any of the small pieces connected to your pipes come loose. These noises tend to happen when those little parts- such as washers, bolts, or other components that keep all the water pipes working together- come loose or wear out, which often occurs near a large appliance such as a dishwasher or washing machine.

Gurgling

Obstructions in your pipes can make it hard for water to flow correctly through them. Items that have accidentally found their way into the pipes, built-up soap or other cleaning agents, hard water deposits, or a number of other  Air bubbles can make gurgling noises when the water sputters through the faucets along with the air, causing it to gurgle through the faucet or valve. This noise can also happen when obstructions prevent the water from flowing smoothly. To fix this issue, first check your water pressure and make sure it’s not too low. If the problem persists, you might need to unblock your water pipes.
